Food Sharing #221 - Spicy Joint @ Chatswood, Australia

Hi Everyone,

I’m not a fan of spicy food but every time we walk past this restaurant the nice aroma always try to lure me into the restaurant. This time I gave up so asked hubby if he wanted to check it out. We went when it first opened for lunch so there were plenty of seating available. This restaurant used to be a famous yum cha place but due to COVID, business have dropped so they closed it up. Shame but I guess another opportunity for someone else to open up here. Located on top of Chatswood station, this place is really easy to get to.

Let’s have a look at the menu. The menu had many choice but here are only some of the choices available. Lots to choose from, be sure you are hungry before arriving. We ordered the pig stomach and chicken soup, fried pork trotter in chilli sauce, pork rib with couscous and pumpkin, deep fried buns with condense milk and XO sauce hot pot noodles. We did order a lot of food because we want try everything, I guess we couldn’t finish, we could always take home some left overs. I’m glad there were many non chilli dishes to choose from so there is always something for everyone.

The food came quickly. First up was the soup. Gosh that chicken soup sell so nice. On top that, the pig stomach was tender and thinly cut just like you have them in Asia. It was really a serve for 4 but we were happy to drink it all between the two of us. Next was the fried pork trotter in chilli. It was a dish I didn’t expect to be so yummy. The pork trotter was first fried then drenched in the chilli sauce. I had my water ready but surprisingly, the chilli level was not bad. With the pork trotter fried beforehand really made everything tasted so yummy, it was another highlight of this meal after the soup.

Next was the pork rib with couscous and pumpkin. My mother in law makes this dish often and I have to saw the restaurant doesn’t do it as good as her. It was a big serving, tasted great but I guess the seasoning my mother in law uses was slightly better, after all it’s homemade. I love fried buns with condense milk, it’s a childhood favourite and I just recently found out my kids love this dish as well. Great replacement for any noodles or rice dishes. Lastly, the noodles in XO sauce had a strong soy taste and came out nice and hot in the hot pot. The serving wasn’t big and if I had to choose, this dish was the easiest to make and didn’t match up to the expectation to the dishes we had so far.

Service here was a hit and miss as not all servers understood English. Luckily we know Chinese so it was easy for us to ask questions but if you are a foreigner, it may be a bit difficult. Seating at the restaurant was comfortable but keep in mind they don’t take bookings so be sure to go early if you want to get a table. Great location on top of the station and after a nice meal, can walk over to Westfield to get some shopping done. Highly recommend this yummy restaurant!

Since living in Vietnam, my spicy taste bud has gone from 10 to now probably 4.
Which is good since too spicy is bad fo the soul :)
