# 735 - Native American Dollar - Part 3

Most of the info below came from https://nativeamericandollars.com/

The Native American Dollar coin series launched in 2009 to honor the contributions and accomplishments of Native Americans. Each year, a unique reverse design representing a different theme has been paired with the popular obverse design featuring Sacagawea.

The reverse design for each year is to be emblematic of one important Native American or Native American contribution. To the extent possible, the design themes are to be issued in the chronological order in which the Native Americans lived or the events occurred.

The 2011 coin featured the theme “Supreme Sachem Ousamequin, Massasoit of the Great Wampanoag Nation Creates Alliance with Settlers at Plymouth Bay.”

In 1621, the Supreme Sachem Ousamequin Massasoit of the Wampanoag Tribe made a formal treaty with the English who had settled in what is now Plymouth, Massachusetts. The Massasoit had promised to defend the settlers against hostile tribes and in return for their intervention if his people were attacked. This is believed to be the first written peace treaty between a Native American tribe and European settlers.

Proof coins were also minted and this is the scope of this series. All are PF-70 UC graded by NGC. As with all modern proof coinage, the coins feature a cameo finish with frosted raised design elements and mirrored background fields.

The coins were made of 88.5% Copper, 6% Zinc, 3.5% Manganese and 2% Nickel and their weight is 8.1g.

NGC graded 7,782 2011 $1 "Wampanoag Treaty" Proofs, with 1,464 as PF-70 UC. 1,673,010 coins were minted in San Francisco.

I bought this coin in 2013 for $28.35 and today's price is around $60.00.

The reverse design selected to represent the theme took a symbolic approach and showed a depiction of the hands of the Massasoit and Governor John Carver exchanging the ceremonial peace pipe after the initiation of the alliance. The reverse was designed by Richard Masters and engraved by Joseph Menna.

The obverse design, featuring the portrait of Sacagawea and child, was designed by Glenna Goodacre.

A beautifully designed coin. I have the 2000 P business strike version from another Stacker in the US that was my first real look at this type.
Thanks for sharing @ronaldoavelino
