The Witness (a short story)

It's funny how an event could change your cool trouble-free life to something straight out of a horror movie.

Few weeks ago Ayo was just a frustrated banker who was trying to make meaning out of his life but all of that changed one night on his way back home from work.

Ayo was angrily walking home from work, he was upset because somehow he had misplaced the money he kept for his transportation and now he had to endure an hour of trekking just to get home. He was still swearing for whoever it was that must have stolen his money when something caught his attention. Somewhere across the lonely street he was on, he saw two men who were dressed in black open the trunk of their cat and carried something out. At first he wasn't sure what they took out until he approached it after they've left.

When Ayo got home that night, he couldn't eat. The image of the corpse he just saw was still fresh in his mind. The body had cutlass cut on it but Ayo was still able to recognize who the unfortunate person was, Chief Adeyemi's only male son.

It didn't take long before the news of Samuel, Chief Adeyemi's son filled the air. His body had been discovered by a woman who was hawking on the street. The ambulance were called and the body was taken away. Three days later, Ayo was still at work when he overheard some people talking about a huge prize that would be given to anyone who came forward with informations that could help capture those who were behind the death of Samuel.

“Ten million Naira could go a long way in my life” Ayo though as he sat on a bus on his way home. After the incident, he had vowed never to walk home again, even if it meant him starving himself just to be able to pay for his transportation.

Ayo knew he could help the police speed up their investigation, he saw the faces of the two guys who dumped the body and he was sure one of them had a little pheonix tattooed on his arm. He decided he was going to tell what he saw, because it was the right thing to do and he needed the money badly.

When Ayo called the number that the Adeyemi's had left for anyone who had vital information to call, they had asked that they met with him the next day but he had refused, he had his work to attend and had instead scheduled their meet to be on Sunday when he would be off work.

For the rest of that week, Ayo moved like he was a spy that was trying to avoid being spotted. And though he had pleaded with them to keep their conversation a secret, he still felt he had to make sure no one was following him around.

Sunday finally came and he quickly got ready. He made an order for an Uber because he wanted to avoid jumping from one commercial bus to another. His Uber arrived and he jumped in.

“Jakande Estate please” he directed the driver and relaxed at the back of the car.

Fifteen minutes into the ride, his phone rang. Ayo quickly brought it out and answered.

“Hello?”

“Hello sir, I'm at the front of your house sir”

Ayo was confused. “Sorry who's this?”

“The Uber you ordered sir, I'm waiting for you at the front of your house”

Ayo froze.

He then slowly brought the phone down before looking at the driver who seemed to be focused on his driving. At his left arm, was the drawing of a little Phoenix bird.
