The Generator Thief

For the past few weeks, the heat at this part of the world has become a little unbearing. We wake up at midnights only to realized that our pillow has been soaked with sweats, almost as if we took our bath right on top of it. So I decided enough was enough and went to meet my caretaker.

We have this rule here in one hostel which states that no generator should be on once it’s twelve midnight and that is so that other tenants can have a nice, quiet and peaceful sleep. But I knew that with the amount of heat in town, there was nothing peaceful about anyone’s sleep. So I walked up to the caretaker and pleaded with her to please let me leave my generator on past twelve midnight.

It took a little time to convince her but she finally agreed on one condition, that I turned it off once it’s three in the morning. Now you see, I live in the topmost floor of a two story building while we all keep our generator’s somewhere downstairs when it’s on, there’s no way I was going to go downstairs by that time of the night alone to go turn it off but she didn’t know that so I agreed.

The moment it was ten in the night, I went downstairs, turned on my generator and went back upstairs and before I knew it, I was asleep. Four hours later, a knock on my door woke me up. I thought it was my caretaker coming to remind me about our deal but it was someone else.

With sleepy eyes, I asked him what he wanted. “They stole your generator but we caught him” the guy spoke out the words that brought me back to reality faster that I could ever imagine and that was when I realized that my fan was no longer on, there was no light in my room.

Before I could go downstairs, the thief had been handed over to the vigilante in our area who will later hand him over to the police. I quickly carried my generator upstairs. I’d rather soak my pillow than have my generator stolen.
