We Are Alive! August 19th, 2022: Let's Face It, I'm Doing Swell

Ooops

Yesterday, when I got my bag full of dental floss, there was a sample size of lotion made by Neutrogena. It's called "sesame formula" because the main ingredient is sesame oil. When I saw it, I figured I'd give it a try. I've never had any issues with lotions before and if I ever did, the redness would go away within a few minutes.

image.png

I squirted a tiny amount into my left hand and reached over, rubbing it onto my neck, then transfered some to my other hand and rubbed some on the other side of the neck. Then I swiped under my eyes. I had a small itch on my left arm and on my nose.

Every place I just described became red after a few hours. I didn't think much of it, until my neck began to itch severely. And the other side... and under my eyes! And a patch on my arm and on my nose! Oh no.

Bumps began forming and the areas began to swell. I was having an allergic reaction, like i've never had before.

I've been taking anti-histamines to try to reduce the itching and swelling, but it's not doing much. And the medicine has made me very tired and unfocused.

What Caused This?

After looking up that particular lotion, I first discovered it was discontinued. That's my first clue. I found it on Amazon (I don't advise purchasing it) and found the ingredient list, since the sample bottle wouldn't reveal that information.

image.png

I saw that one of the main ingredients was sesame oil, maybe I was allergic to sesame oil? We actually had a bottle of sesame oil, so we tried a little on a patch of skin to see if I broke out. Nothing happened. It's not the sesame oil.

Another on the list that was questionable was Diazolidinyl Urea. It's the only ingredient that I don't recall seeing in any other lotion or product. I did some research specifically on this ingredient and here's what came up.

Perhaps I have discovered the offending ingredient in the skin lotion. I inspected other lotions we have in the house and discovered this ingredient in those also. Strange thing is that I've never had an issue using those products

I don't know for certain that Diazolidinyl Urea is what caused this reaction, but it seems the best candidate.

On the Bright Side

The good news is that even though I'm experiencing discomfort, my family is almost completely over the illness we've been dealing with for the past few weeks!! My wife and I are both no longer coughing and our sore throats have gone away.

We are so happy to be over this! Never mind the discomfort on my face and neck, our bodies are healing! This too shall pass and the swelling with go back to normal.

Just have to be patient, not itch it, continue with the anti-histamines and hydrocortisone creams and wait.

Hello my friend! 😊

I feel for you, that is just what I looked like after spending several hours (6 hours of parade practice for a big event) outside in the sun, only it was both sides of my face. I joked that I looked like the "Elephant Man", when I saw myself. Thankfully, I've long since retired and never have to spend that long out in the sun again. Now I'm more of a 15 minutes here and 15 minutes there kind of gal. A whole lot of Benadryl and an EpiPen were my best friends until the swelling got under control. 😊

Hang in there, the swelling and itching will go away. 😊

God bless you and your wonderful family. Have an awesome day my fabulous friend! 😊

Thank you so much, with time it'll heal up. I've been on Benadryl non stop since my face swelled, it's making me feel very tired. So glad the weekend is almost here!!!

Me too, though it's a busy weekend for us as we're celebrating both our middle and youngest grandson's birthday with a party in the park. 😊

Sorry to see you get such an allergic reaction Benjamin, I never use lotions much, just the hands when it's cold or they will crack, I hope you recover soon and get some rest.

If Diazolidinyl Urea would be the culprit then what's the explanation for

...discovered this ingredient in those also. Strange thing is that I've never had an issue using those products..

That means you have been exposed to the ingredient before without having a reaction.

Anyway, hope that it will go away soon and your face will return to the old state.

My working theory is that because I've been ill the last few weeks, my immune system is on a hair's trigger. I've been on antibiotics also, perhaps that is playing a role too. These are my guesses. I haven't tried the other lotion recently, I would suppose I would react to it the same way.

My dad had a similar reaction when he touched poison ivy on his arm, red itchy patches appeared all over his body.

Also I should have clarified, I never had a reaction LIKE THIS, I have observed redness from using lotions, but it always went away within an hour or so.

You have valid points. Your recent illness may be the triggering factor.

Anyway, good luck.
