Have you ever ran from something into a more deadly one? If you have, you know how it feels. What brought me out that night? What???

Very late at night on a busy friday. I had gone into a challenge with my friends, that the safety of my environment is 100 percent, we argued and argued, till I was put to test with vigilantes patrolling every corner of the street. What could one possibly be afraid of? I took up the challenge, I told them that one day. I will be home very late at night with no spot of harm.

Its saturday morning and I'm to be attending a very important business meeting during the evening. The meeting finished late, so everyone was adviced to sleep over and go home the other day. But which business meeting would hold till 11:58pm?
Trust Global Ventures. They are more than capable of such. Meeting are normally scheduled at night. We call it, sleep over meetings.

Looks like this was the right moment to prove my friends wrong. I decided to walk home very late at night after the meeting, exactly 12:03am.

I left the company just few kilometers away from the company, I saw a group of thugs. I was scared, but I gave myself confidence on seeing some vigilantes very far away. One of the thugs saw me and silently distanced himself from others. I noticed he was coming close to me, so I started walking fast. I was already in panic. I looked back trying to know if the guy was still following me, but he was nowhere to be found.

“Thank God!! I lost him” I said to myself.

All of a sudden, someone pulled me and pushed me down into the nearest bush. He was already removing his belt ready to flog me with it, I managed to break free from him holding my feet. I kicked him hard in between his legs and ran away. He chased me immediately shouting thief! thief!!.

The vigilantes heard the noise and shouts of thief. The vigilantes started pursuing me. The guy was just few kilometers away laughing as he handed me directly into the hands of the vigilantes as thief.

I ran like a christmas chicken. I got to one point and hid myself. I can see the vigilantes run pass me.

“Thank God I have lost them” I said with joy.

“Here is his picture, make sure you kill him and bring me his right middle finger. Only then will you receive your payments” I happen to overhear some people discussing. I tried to sneak out but I was spotted.

“He must have heard everything we said, go after him and kill him” the boss ordered his boys.

Did I just hear kill him?, I'm finished, I said to myself.

I ran and ran, I passed one guy who was struggling to call someone with his phone. The guy hid himself on noticing the killers. I ran towards the estate where I live, finally I got to the gate but the gate was locked. I knocked hard but nobody came out.

Just then, the assassins were right in front of me. One of them pulled out his gun ready to shoot as sound of a speeding vehicle was heard, along with a gunshots on the air. The assassins took to their hills and I was saved by the vigilantes. It was the guy I had passed earlier that called the vigilantes to my direction. He was there standing like a superhero who was saved the earth from eternal destruction.

The expression, Don't tempt fate comes to mind as I finish this story. The pride, the arrogance, of the narrator are almost his undoing. The only shred of hope we had for this character was that he was telling the story, so he must have survived (we hoped). Barely, it turns out. It seems there is no safety in his environment. This is probably a lesson that will save his life in the future.

Thank you for posting this rather rattling story in the in the Ink Well community.

That was very suspenseful, @cryptofi. I couldn't imagine how the narrator was going to get out of that dire situation until the very end of the story!

This is full of suspense... You had me wondering how the narrator would pull himself out of that horrible situation.
Thankfully, he got saved. And no more night walking for him again.
This is a good job well done bro... Keep it up👍🏽
