Trey Lance 2021 NFL 'Rated Rookie' Rookie Card - Donruss/Panini - San Francisco 49ers Quarterback

For the past three NFL seasons, the San Francisco 49ers have been by far the weirdest team in the league. I truly don't know what to make of them.

Three years ago, the 49ers were suddenly an elite team after five years of mostly sucking pretty bad. They nearly won the dang Super Bowl! As soon as the Niners became a good team, the media sorta spazzed over them. The Niners have a pretty spectacular history, most of the franchise's accomplishments coming before my own existence (1970-1990's-ish). Still, I respect those years even though I was not alive. In addition to their rather prestigious history, San Fran is a pretty large market and their head coach Kyle Shanahan is a pretty young guy and the son of a former great NFL head coach, Mike Shanahan. So I guess those ingredients make for a fair sports media frenzy as a whole.

Then, as soon as the Niners were good in 2019, they sucked in 2020. Many sort of shrug at that season due to the Niners' many injuries that year, but hey, the Titans still won games with HELLA injuries in 2021. I find that Niners 2020 season to be majorly suspect. Is Kyle Shanahan worth they hype?

Then in 2021, they were a solid team that squeaked into the Playoffs and actually had a fair run in the playoffs.

So, their inconsistency makes the Niners weird. BUT what also makes them weird is their current quarterback situation. The Niners have basically an ok game manager in Jimmy G at QB, and they sort of disrespect the guy year in and year out and blame him for basically every bad thing that happens to the team.

I mean, the way the media AND his own team disrespect a relatively fine, average QB is pretty insane.

Then, in 2021 the Niners draft a QB prospect in Mr. Trey Lance which led to this rookie card that I own existing, LOL!

Drafting Trey makes this 49ers situation and team even weirder. Trey Lance is now entering his second year and is expected to replace and be better than Jimmy G. I personally wonder if Trey is capable of that. Trey comes from a small school and honestly, nothing he has done has really looked that awesome so far. His college tape was not even all that great in my eyes. All he really did was like run a lot and throw bombs. There's a lot more to being an NFL QB than those two plays.

So, the media for whatever reason despises Jimmy G. His own team hates him and they draft a young kid in Trey Lance that came from a random school in North Dakota. While the media has some mixed feelings about Lance, apparently most feel he's still absolutely gonna be better than Jimmy and will take the Niners to the next level.

I don't know man, I don't know if I see it. Trey is ok, I just don't know if I really see greatness in him. I feel like the media likes him because he can run.

The Niners are hyped every year lately, Kyle Shanahan is supposed to be like a football genius. It would be a bad look if the Niners ditch Jimmy G for a lesser QB.

I usually write optimistic posts about players, and Trey does have some skill, I'm just nervous about the whole thing. It feels like the Niners are holding on by a thread every year, and this QB situation and the team's unclutchness just feels off. It's hard for me to believe in this team for some reason.

Still, Trey has a pretty strong arm and has a decent physical running style that I'm not mad at. He actually has a lot to like, I just feel like he may need more time adjusting to the pro game. I feel perhaps there's too much hype around him and pressure on him.

I've been wrong before, many times though. If Trey is working hard and continues to work, he has some great potential.

A QB rookie card is sweet no matter what though. If this guy becomes a legend, I imagine I could possibly be a rich man thanks to this card. Anything is possible. These 'rated rookie' varieties are notably desired.

Fingers crossed! There's a lot of pressure on this dude, many think he's the team's 2022 week one starter!

What do you think of Trey Lance? Is he another Carson Wentz (which is not a TOTAL insult, really) or is he the next Pat Mahomes or Josh Allen?

College highlights.

A nice in-depth video of Trey Lance and his pro future created by Alex Rollins, one of my favorite NFL YouTubers.

Never really heard him talk before. A Trey Lance interview on a Niners podcast.

I can't wait for this season damnit!
